HomeEuropeGreece• Kos

Kos is a welcoming island offering an unbeatable mix of golden sandy beaches, modern tourist facilities, a wealth of historical sights and a cosmopolitan capital.

Dolphin-shaped, it is the second largest of the Dodecanese islands, approximately 45kms long and no more than 10km at its widest point. It is here that Hippocrates, the ‘Father of Medicine’, is said to have founded the world’s first known School of Medicine in the 5th century BC, which still stands today in Kos Town.

This vibrant capital also boasts a great many other historical sights that serve as fascinating reminders of the many bygone civilisations that have left their mark. After a day’s exploring, you’ll find plenty of cafes, restaurants and bars by the pleasant harbour where you can sit on a terrace and simply ‘watch the world go by’.

An island suitable for all tastes, Kos is blessed with a smooth coastline dotted with beautiful beaches. Despite a good road network which links villages and resorts, bicycles have always been a popular mode of transport on Kos – but for the less active there is always the option of discovering the island by hiring a car, of course.

The proximity of neighbouring islands such as Kalymnos, Telendos, Patmos and of course Rhodes, makes Kos an excellent destination for those who also fancy a little island-hopping.
